rocky clanker
[ pet ] positive relationship While some might say that Arkwright's relationship to Rocky Clanker, his pet clockroach, is quite literally artificial, he would be one to immediately disagree. Though Rocky is his pet, she has been his friend ever since Courtenay gave her to him. She doesn't have a real "purpose" like most mechaniks have -- for example, elephant mechaniks for pulling heavy or large things, or a bird to recite songs or make recordings -- but he doesn't mind one bit. She seems to have quite the personality of her own and is very active, but often rests on Arkwright's shoulder or in his pockets while he works. Sometimes, she does help him, like to point out a small flaw or malfunction. He feels lonely whenever he is without her and he nearly always has her with him, no matter if he's spending a day working or going out in town. Most of his friends enjoy her too.

matthew courtenay
[ childhood friend ] positive relationship Courtenay has been a friend of his since they were children. They met when Courtenay became a new student at Arkwright's school, having moved from the far-off country of Brenoth. Arkwright had always been an odd one out at his school and he jumped at the opportunity to make a friend, which he certainly did. Courtenay was an incredibly intelligent child, even smarter than Arkwright, and the two were a bit competitive in their academics. They grew up together, Arkwright explaining the beauties of mechaniks while Courtenay explained the wonders of science, of chemistry and biology. Their worlds mixed in a wonderful way, and Courtenay is actually the one that sparked the notion in Arkwright's mind, a notion that would last his entire life, that all mechaniks were living. Unfortunately, as they grew up, Courtenay had to leave to go to the university, though he was sure to take a local one for Arkwright's sake. Courtenay studied in many fields, one of which was invention, where he became known for many designs. One of which, the clockroach, there is only one of, and that one was given to Arkwright as sort of a gift to his lonely friend.

khriston
[ regular customer ] positive relationship Khriston, an experienced pilot, is one of his regulars, which he is a bit conflicted about. Why? Well, Khriston isn't big on the whole mechanik scene -- they tend to clash sometimes over that and Khriston never stays in the town of Wesfair for very long because of this. Rather than bring him his usual repair jobs of the "living metal" mechaniks, her personal fighter plane, a biplane known as the Blackbullet, is something she personally prefers Arkwright to fix when something goes wrong. While he doesn't like dealing with technology that isn't his specialty, he makes an exception for Khriston. He has befriended her well beforehand, and they often speak and have rather nice conversation each time she visits. While her visits aren't regular, they are regular enough for her to be one of his closer friends, despite the fact that she doesn't even live in the same hemisphere as he does. He finds her repulsion of mechaniks a little amusing, especially when it comes to Rocky -- Khriston hates the little thing -- and it's almost as if Rocky knows, too, because she goes out of her way to mess with the unfortunate pilot whenever she visits the two.

charlotte
[ friend ] positive relationship Charlotte is a worker at the Foundry and this is how they met; now, they're fairly good friends and she often comes over to visit, both for work-related purposes and personal ones. Charlotte is usually the one to come to him, representing the Foundry itself, about problems or mishaps that he might be able to fix, and due to her close relationship with Arkwright serves as a sort of mid-ground for other foundry workers and higher-ups and the mechanik doctor himself. Arkwright trusts Charlotte very highly, and this trust goes vice-versa, as well, even allowing her occasionally to watch his shop, should he ever go out of town for one reason or another.

alvin svent
[ acquaintance ] neutral relationship Arkwright doesn't know Svent all that well, although they have spoken and met upon a few occasions. Svent occasionally visits to see his brother, Courtenay, and as Courtenay and Arkwright are pretty common to hang out with each other, Arkwright was introduced with Svent. He doesn't like him, though at the same time, he doesn't dislike him, either. He is wary of Svent, mostly due to the amount of loyalty that the viscet holds -- well, the lack thereof, that is. Svent also seems to trivialize Arkwright and Courtenay's technology and how much the two enjoyed studying and learning, finding it much less useful than just going out and getting into the brunt of things. Svent is completely aware of Arkwright's annoyances about the insults of technology, but seems to care none -- even going so far as to tease Arkwright further about the subject.

tanzy
[ acquaintance ] negative relationship Arkwright and Tanzy do not, and I repeat do not, get along. Arkwright would love to get along, but they are two almost complete opposites. Arkwright almost constantly encourages Tanzy to be more optimistic and sociable; unfortunately for Arkwright, this is hardly doable with Tanzy's rather negative outlook on...well, everything, really. Arkwright's encouraging is easy to get on Tanzy's nerves and can lead to spats between them whenever they're around each other, so they simply tend to ignore and avoid each other as much as they possibly can. After all, it's...probably the better for the both of them, as well as everyone in the surrounding vicinity, that they stay away from each other. Safety and all that.
